Songbird Caged (Book #2 Songbird Trilogy) by Lisa Edward with Review

Tara has made a promise.

A promise to wait six months for Riley to come home from his tour of duty, so they can be together.

But as secrets and lies are uncovered, it leads Tara to question their commitment, and she is finding it difficult to keep that promise.

The distance between them is growing, and only one person can fill the void, Tara’s best friend Cole.

As Cole tries to support Tara, he is struggling with demons of his own, that threaten to tear him away from the life he has built for himself.

After devastating news is received, who will be there to pick up the pieces?

My Review: 5 stars
I knew that Lisa would not disappoint with this second book in the Songbird Trilogy, and I was so right. This book began just after the last book ended. If you haven't read the first book, Songbird, stop reading this now and go read it. Things will make so much more sense.
Tara is in an unenviable position; she's engaged to a man out of a sense of duty, she says so herself that if he hadn't been deployed, she wouldn't be engaged to him at all. She loves Riley, but isn't in love with him - huge difference. There's also the fact that Riley kept secrets from her, and apparently continued to do so, even after they were engaged. I didn't like that he wanted to control what she did with her money, and with herself. That's not love, it's possession and it's wrong. I understand Riley, being a man and a soldier would want to support his family, but he takes it too far in my opinion.
Tara spends a lot of time with her best friend, Cole. I knew when I was reading the last book that Cole was different, I was so right. Cole opens up and shows Tara exactly who he is - all of him. They are both from the same world, but have decided it's not for them. Cole is being pressured by his family to marry a girl he can't stand, and the girl just wants his money and status. I loved Cole's Pops and thought that he was just an awesome person. I also loved the last bit that he got in. Can't say more, but it's so good.
After reading this book, I want for Tara and Cole to be together. Whether I get that or not remains to be seen. They truly are each other's best friend, and they're also in love with each other. There are a lot of things that happen that make me want Cole and Tara together, the most important is that they are a couple in every sense of the word. They talk out their differences, and Cole takes Tara's opinion of things seriously. He wants her to be happy, and to him that's everything. He values her interests and her thoughts. Cole keeps her safe in more than one way. He rescues her again, and that's when things start to heat up between them. From that point on, everything between Tara and Cole sizzles, and keeps getting hotter. They do fight and have disagreements, but they also can't stay away from each other, and they always work things out and support the other. That's how it's supposed to be.
The last line of the book wasn't completely unexpected, but damn! Lisa knows how to keep the reader hooked completely. All I can say further is that I hope that Tara stays true to herself and the realizations she had before everything went the way they did. I absolutely can't wait for the last book, and truly do hope that Tara, the Songbird is freed.

While Lisa Edward has called Melbourne Australia home for her entire life, she has lived and worked in England, and travelled through most parts of Europe and the United States. She loves nothing more than spending time with her husband and beautiful daughter, or curling up into the early hours of the morning with a great novel. By day, Lisa works in the analytical IT field, so relishes the opportunity to foster her creative side through writing. Her deep appreciation for literature was nurtured from a young age, being taught to respect books and get lost in their stories. She enjoys reading honest and realistic novels that are relatable, thought provoking and leave a lasting impression. She can’t write without music playing, using the emotions from different songs to invoke that of her characters. Lisa takes inspiration from her own life experiences, the people around her and those she has met in her travels.
